Gallery Animato opened their doors in April. 1992 in Birmingham, Michigan. Owners Bob and Elaine Athey started their gallery with three things in mind, put the customer first, offer great artwork at a fair price, and ALWAYS keep it FUN!
The gallery’s interest and enthusiasm for animation art captured everyone’s attention! Newspaper and magazinearticles were written, television, news and radio interviews were broadcast and people from all over were coming to see what Gallery Animato had to offer. Paying close attention to customer requests and offering the best vintage and contemporary pieces, quickly brought the gallery to where it is today – one of the most respected animation art galleries in the country.
As the gallery started moving forward the Athey’s hosted special events. Industry legends like Chuck Jones, Joe Barera, Bill Melendez and Iwoa Takamoto, among other animation greats, came to the Gallery to meet with animation greats, came to the gallery to meet with animation fans in a series of open houses. When Gallery Animato an event, a great time is guaranteed. Meeting the actual animator of your favorite cartoon character – how cool is that?!
By 2001 Gallery Animato had branched out by Offering original posters, boasting a collection of over 20,000 pieces, as well as their own in – house, custom Frame shop.
In 2004 the Athey’s moved their expanding gallery to a larger space in Royal Oak, Michigan. The new space is double the size of their first location and just about every square inch of the gallery is used to offer the greatest finds in animation art and movie posters.
